GameStop Canada acquired; to rebrand as EB Games
GameStop has sold its Canadian business.
French-Canadian entrepreneur Stephan Tetrault, founder of toymaker Imports Dragon and co-owner of McFarlane Toys, has acquired Electronics Boutique Canada inc., also known as "GameStop Canada," from GameStop Global Holdings. GameStop Canada’s 185 stores will relaunch as EB Games Canada, the name it held before being rebranded in 2021.
"This isn't just a business decision – it's about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved," said Tetrault. "We're going to build something special here, with community, nostalgia and innovation at its heart."
Terms of the sale were not disclosed. Plans for the revamped EB Games include enhanced in-store events, expanded product lines, deeper integration with pop culture brands, and a “renewed focus on Canadians.” The transition to EB Games Canada will roll out nationwide over the coming months, including updated store signage, a redesigned website, and new branding across digital and social platforms all in order to enhance customer experience.
"We want EB Games Canada to be more than a store – we want it to be the hub for gaming and fandom culture across Canada," said Jim Tyo, president of GameStop Canada. "This is about passion, and that's what's going to drive every decision we make."
On Feb. 18 of this year, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he was looking to sell the company’s Canadian and French operations.
“Email M&[email protected] if you’re interested in buying GameStop Canada or Micromania France,” he wrote. “High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI included at no additional cost if you buy today!”
The sale of GameStop Canada comes as the video game retailer has been shrinking its footprint both domestically and around the globe. In 2024, GameStop closed down store operations in Germany after shutting down operations in Ireland, Switzerland and Austria the previous year. It has also initiated a plan to divest its operations in Italy.

In late March, GameStop said it anticipated closing a “significant number” of additional stores in fiscal 2025.
As of Feb. 1, GameStop operated approximately 3,200 stores worldwide.
